Polish Sausage!

The winner of the 2024 Polish Street Food Awards is the Serenada/Highlander Piekielnie Dobre Jedzonko food truck serving zapiekanki, a classic Polish street food that (confusingly) can either mean everything from a traditional casserole to a baked, open-faced sandwich dubbed the “Polish pizza”.

Zapiekanki evokes memories of the final days of Communism, and its comeback is driven by a wave of nostalgia – but, mercifully, ingredients have had a revamp along the way. Nowadays the sandwiches are made of crusty, freshly-baked bread, covered with artisan toppings, and melted Polish cheese. Not a microwave in sight. The good old days just got better.

“We will represent Poland on the European stage in October!” say the Serenada team. “The final will take place behind our western border – in Germany (on October 4-6)! Now we feel joy and happiness mixed with tears! Serenada. Best food truck – ever. And rest…”

The People’s Choice title was won by the food truck Coś Innego. It’s their third year of operation, and – as the first 100% gluten-free food truck in Poland – Ania and Michal are clearly impressing the people of Poland with Something Different. Full speed ahead for Saarbrucken!
