Judgement Day
Now THIS is what you call a judging panel. Pull up a chair….
Meet Julian Rupp – currently rattling the pots and pans as Head of Pastry at Schreiberei and the 2* Michelin Tohru in Schreiberei in Munich. This weekend he’s got the day off and he’s judging the finals of the biggest street food competition in the world, at Sugar Mountain October 7-9. #chefgoals.
Before that Julian was with Gotz Rothacker from the 2* Michelin Talvo in Switzerland and the 1* Michelin Acquarello in Munich. He’s been around the block, as we say in England. And now he’s joining our HUGE panel of judges at the European Street Food Awards – Finals Europe 2022. That’s a life well lived.
Chef Rico Birndt was an obvious judge for the #EuroSFA in Munich. He loves street food so much he serves it on the rooftop of his restaurant – the Mural Farmhouse – which abides by the “Eat local, drink natural” principle established by the Michelin-starred Mural.
Chef René Stein from Tisane gets the immediacy of street food. Tisane doesn’t separate the kitchen from the dining room. There’s no front of house, no back of house, and contact with the guests isn’t only via the plates but through personal dialogue. It’s communicative cooking. Just like street food.
And Sam and Shauna? First Ladies of ‘Cue’? The two Welsh chefs started out as street food traders. They’ve gone on to be restaurant owners at Hang Fire BBQ, TV hosts, cookbook authors and all-out food obsessives. Of course they wanted to judge the European Street Food Awards at Sugar Mountain – hosted by Street Food Festival München. That’s why they are driving all the way from the UK to be involved.
But who will they choose as champions? And who will YOU vote for as the people’s choice? For those of you who can’t get along in person keep an eye on social media – and get our European Street Food Awards] supplement in The New European this weekend, with recipes from some of the finalists from the SIXTEEN countries that took part this year….
