Switzerland Are In!
The first ever Swiss Street Food Awards took place on the Marie-Bürkli-Eck, in the trendy Viadukt area of Zurich. That’s where the country’s ten top street food chefs were invited to cook for our esteemed jury – and a hungry and expectant audience – at the end of August. And this is what the winners looked like.
Swiss Champion – Food On Wheels
People’s Choice – Pommes Atelier
Jury’s Choice – Lax Food Truck
After 20 years of running restaurant kitchens, at home and abroad, Enrico took delivery of Food On Wheels – his first ever food truck. “Running my truck means combining freedom on the street and freedom in the kitchen” he says. “I am flexible with my locations, plus I see and experience new things every day!
He was delighted to beat Lax Food Truck with his healthy and seasonal fast food menu. The black Lax truck became a firm favourite with the jury, and it’s easy to understand why. “In our smoking ovens on the truck we smoke our hot smoked lax burgers fresh in front of the guests.”
Food On Wheels also beat the People’s Choice – Pommes Atelier. Simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve. And that’s certainly the case with French fries. Pommes Atelier don’t buy their potatoes pre-prepped from the cash and carry. “We make real French fries, on site, from fresh Swiss potatoes and use them to create the finest French fries.”
So now the new Swiss street food royalty can think about 2022, when – if they win – they will be able to take on the best of Europe with the return of the grand final of the European Street Food Awards. Watch this space.
